Good article posted this week in Government Computer News by IDC Government Senior Analyst Shawn McCarthy. He writes about some of the ways that government would utilize business intelligence systems such as:
- Payer optimization for taxes and licensing.
- Case Management improvements for human services, licensing and inspection.
- Grants management and reporting.
- Adding graphical elements for collected data.

Oracle’s been in the BI game since 1995 when it purchased Oracle Express from IRI Software. Showing a major shift in the market, Oracle announced two years ago that its major corporate focus was BI. Even Microsoft announced that their new SQL Server 2007 database would have BI components built in them.
Companies, people, and government. Everyone is trying to find ways to get at the information that is relevant to them. One of the reasons why Google is so successful is that when you ask for something, it seems to know exactly what you’re asking for not just from the word perspective, but from the context perspective. When you ask for something it seems to know what you want.
Companies are trying to do the same thing with their corporate data, their logistics data, and their financial data and HR data. In the government, you hear that a large part of the work force will be retiring soon. One thing that BI allows you to do, is to take things that are in the senior users heads and can put in to the applications. You don’t always need someone with 20 years experience to answer your questions. An example is that 20 years ago every large company had an economist. Not anymore. You can get all the information you need from the web. Third party companies do that process for you today. They take huge amounts of data, organize it into information, extract the knowledge out of it and make it valuable for you so that you can make better business decisions.
